To begin, here are the steps for the traditional paving stone foundation.

  • Evaluation of excavation height
  • Excavation of 12 to 16 inches depending on soil type
  • Laying the geotextile membrane

2. Foundation

Laying 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone 0 – 1 1/2″
Laying 6 to 8 inches of crushed stone 0 – 3/4″
Intense compaction of the foundation

3. Laying bed

Laying 1 inch of stone dust

4. Laying the paving stones

5. Laying polymer sand

In this example, we have the sub-base which is 0 – 1 1/2″ crushed stone. The foundation, which is 0 – 3/4″ crushed stone and the bedding layer which is stone dust. For the geotextile membrane, it is normally found between the soil and the foundation.
